4 Photoshop Books - Attention Photoshoppers, Reviews of Four Recent
Photoshop Books. When a program emerges with the market dominance of
Photoshop, its natural to expect a number of related books to appear, and
this has certainly been the case with Photoshop. In a recent Mac Monitor
we examined the Macworld Photoshop 2.5 Bible (IDG), Visual Quickstart
Guide, The Photoshop Wow Book, Photoshop in Black and White (all from
Peachpit Press), Designer Photoshop (Random House), and related books on
scanning and color separations. Now weve received a whole new crop. The
Best: The Macworld Photoshop 3 Bible (2nd Edition) by Deke McClelland
remains the definitive resource for users of the program.

System 7.5 offers more of a facelift than anything. But the changes are

I want for Christmas are more solitaire games by Glenn Seemann. Why, you
ask? Well, it all started when I downloaded Glenns Shodan from America

nine-tile matching game were soothing after a hard day at work. It was
click, click, click into a serene restful state. After sending in the $15
shareware fee, I was surprised to receive Golf and Pyramid, new versions
of old computer classics. Now I just want more of these great games and
updated versions, Santa! What is Golf like? To begin, a tableau of
thirty-five cards is automatically dealt.

increasing my bonus time to prolong the squelching noise. At some
primitive level of being, I was amused. Ive matured after playing the game

a new habit. Ive been making fonts for about five months, but I consider
myself an artist first, a writer second, and then maybe a type designer,
and an undisciplined one at that. Making fonts is guerilla warfare. I make
them as quick as I can if it takes longer than a night, its a lie and
then blast them into cyberspace, sit back, and see what happens.
Spontaneity is crucial. I use several different software programs:

card metaphor, you create fields of information, graphics, sound, and video

different cards. These groups of cards are called stacks. HyperCard uses a
powerful, high-level (very English-like) programming language called
HyperTalk to script responses to user actions. With the 2.2 release of
HyperCard, Apple has addressed the serious weaknesses of HyperCard - the
lack of color and animation tools.

including Photoshop, had to have some incredible minds. I often wonder how
they came up with the number of controls and filters they wanted to
include. Think of the features they probably left out because they could
not resolve the bugs. Download for more info.

Photoshop Review - Photoshop 3.0, PowerPC Version Sports New Features. The
biggest news of the year for many graphics professionals is the release of
a major upgrade to Adobe Photoshop. One can argue the relative merits of
Illustrator vs. FreeHand, or PageMaker vs. QuarkXPress, but there simply
is no competition for Photoshop.* Not content to rest on its laurels,
Adobe has brought out version 3.0 of the programpacked with many
improvements both large and small. Probably the biggest changeand the most
eagerly anticipatedis Layers. Compositing (combining parts of two or more
images) is an important aspect of working with a program like Photoshop.
Previous versions of the program placed limitations on this procedure.

Description:
UnderWare Review.pdf - UnderWare - Desktop Patterns, Screensavers, and
MORE! Having been a fan of SoundMaster for many years, I am no stranger to
frivolous, do-nothing software. Id still be using AfterDark if it werent
for the increased number of bombs and freeze-ups that have always appeared
with its presence on my Macintosh. I have also avoided the many amusing
shareware add-ons that are available because of an irrational fear of INIT
conflicts, and because most of them just seem too downright silly even for
me. Therefore I was interested to hear about a newly released commercial
product called Underware which is designed to re-establish the Macintoshs
historic dominance in the delightfully amusing and fun category.

PowerMac/AV. This article will tell you about one of the amazing things
you can do with graphics on the Power Macintosh/AV. If you do not now have
an audio-visual Power Mac, you will want to buy one when you finish
reading the next two pages. The Power Mac/AV comes with a folder called
Apple Extras. One of the extras is a program called Video Monitor. Its a
simple QuickTime application, providing you with a monitor for video. This
is where you can start having some fun with the computers video
capabilities. I have been amazed at the versatility of this program.

Virtus VR.pdf - Virtus VR - A walk through a virtual world. Virtual Reality
is an up and coming concept for personal computers these days. Once
reserved for the biggest mainframes, Virtual Reality is available now at
home and business computing levels due to the explosion of desktop power.
The basic idea is to create models of reality in three dimensions and to
move through and view this virtual world. A model might be as simple as
your living room or as complicated as the inside of an automobile engine.
Virtus Corporation is known in the Macintosh world for its professional
3-D visualization application, WalkThrough Pro. Now they have released
Virtus VR, a scaled-down version for creating simpler 3-D worlds.

Virus Paranoia.pdf - Virus Paranoia - Are you protected? Youve no doubt
heard of computer viruses and Trojan horses. These are programs which can
infect your computer and do various sorts of damage, up to and including
erasing the entire contents of your hard drive. Its natural to be at least
a little para- noid about the subject. You can take some solace in the
fact that there are only 17 known Macintosh viruses, according to a
MacWEEK report, although there have been about 3,000 found in the DOS
world. Further, a number of the Mac viruses are relatively benign, at
worst caus- ing system crashes. Nevertheless, its wise to protect
yourself. Its not only wise, its easy, too.

Viva Review.pdf - Face Up! - Whats New in Digital Typography. Viva is
Adobes first multiple master typeface designed especially for display use.
If youve missed out on the news, multiple master technology is an
enhancement of Adobes Type 1 font technology, based on the idea of
interpo- lation. This technology allows typefaces to be customized along
several axes - weight, width, optical size, and style. Instead of the
normal set of four or six variations, a multiple master face can be
adjusted by the user to yield an almost infinite number of variations.

WealthBuilder 2.0 Review.pdf - Investing in your future. When I heard that
Realitys Wealthbuilder 2.0 by Money Magazine had just been released, I was
eager to check it out. I wasnt disappointed. Longtime readers of Mac
Monitor may recall reviews of three excellent financial management
programs - Managing Your Money 4.0, Quicken, and MacMoney. Wealthbuilder
picks up where those three leave off. Managing Your Money goes beyond the
other two in that it can manage and track investments via a portfolio
manager, project future insurance and retirement needs, do budget
analysis, as well and perform several other useful functions, but even it
pales in comparison with Wealthbuilder as a full service, long-range

Word 5.1 Review.pdf - Word 5.1a - Incremental Upgrade includes Several New
Features. Word Version 5.1a is the latest in a number of recent upgrades
for the Macintosh industry standard word processing program. When Word 5.0
was released recently, the trade press suggested that the upgrade was
probably not worth its $129 list price, but it did offer editable
mathematical equations, which are a boon to the technical writer, and the
now necessary built-in drawing module. The former is a version of Design
Sciences MathType 3.11, which is also an industry standard and a very fine
equation editor, while the latter is so fundamental and rudimentary as to
be all but useless except for the most elementary sketches.

XStyle review.pdf - Doing Quark in XStyle - XPress Xtension Simplifies and
Speeds Style Sheets. One of the most powerful aspects of todays page layout
pro- grams is style sheets. Even some word processors have them. A style
sheet lets you define a set of characteristics for text: font, size,
justification, leading, hyphenation specifications, space before and after
paragraphs, and much more. In fact, just about any aspect of text can be
specified in a style sheet. After creating several style sheetsbody,
headlines, subheads, by-lines, etc. they can be applied to paragraphs of
text. Once youve created them, style sheets can really speed up your work.

This is another of my articles on XTensions. Anybody who has known me for
very long knows how irritated Ive been with one aspect of Quarks style
sheets. Heres the scenario- you receive a text file in MacWrite or MS Word
format. The writer has italicized the names of books, and emboldened other
important words. When you import this file into XPress and apply a style
sheet, all of the italic and bold passages (and anything else with local
formatting) reverts to plain text! Read on..

importantly, SPACE COMBAT. I guess its the idea of flying around in a
place as big as space that gets to me, but who wouldnt enjoy piloting a
ship armed to the teeth with guided nuclear missiles, high-tech lasers,
and ultra-sensitive radar? Read on..
